FAQ

Physical Therapy Questions

What is Physical Therapy?

  • Physical therapy is an allied health profession that focuses on the promotion, maintenance, or restoration of health and physical function. It is provided by a physical therapist who will examine, diagnose, and treat physical conditions through exercise prescription, manual therapies, education, and health promotion.

What is the purpose of Physical Therapy?

  • The purpose of physical therapy is to reduce pain, improve mobility, speed recovery, and increase overall physical function in order to return to a full and active life as quickly as possible. We are here to help you recover from surgery/injury, avoid surgery, prevent injury, and increase your quality of life.

Can Physical Therapy help avoid surgery?

  • With certain situations/conditions, physical therapy can ease symptoms and even reverse your condition, eliminating the need for surgery entirely. It is a safe effective way to manage pain and increase function.

Is Physical Therapy painful?

  • We will work with you to minimize pain. Working and stretching muscles can result in patients experiencing some soreness which is normal. As strength and motion improve, soreness reduces. Our goal is to find the proper balance for each individual patient that will maximize results with minimal discomfort

How should I dress?

  • Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing is ideal. For lower body treatment we recommend shorts. For shoulder problems, a t-shirt or tank top, and for back, a loose shirt and pants. You are welcome to bring a change of clothes to change into at the clinic.

How many times will I need to come for treatment?

  • Typically, patients are seen between 1 and 3 times per week depending on the type and severity of the injury. We will adjust treatment duration and number of treatments based on patient needs, recovery, and response to treatment.

Does insurance cover Physical Therapy?

  • Most insurance plans cover at least some Physical Therapy. We will verify your insurance prior to your first visit and go over it with you at your first visit.

Do I need a physician’s script to start Physical Therapy?

  • Yes and no. In the state of Michigan, a physician’s script is NOT required to receive Physical Therapy treatment for 10 visits or 21 days from your first visit (whichever comes first). After this period, however, you will need a physician’s script to continue.
  • Additionally, all patients covered under Medicare DO require a physician’s script to start Physical Therapy.
